No Idea how to start making Game Foliage...

Hi guys,

One of the skills I really want to include in my environments is creating foliage. All I know is you can use alpha maps to generate foliage but I have no idea how to start. I looked through some YouTube tutorials a while back but those didn't provide much clarification.

How would you guys go about creating foliage such as grass, potted plants, tree leaves/detail, etc.?

    @jStins I also wanted to know, how important is foliage for a portfolio?

    If there are 2 candidates who have the same skills for example, would they pick the person who also has foliage skills under their belt over the other who doesn't?

    Who would you pick mate? The one who knows skill A (100%) or the one who knows skill A (100%) and skill B (whatever percent). Ofc its second option.
    If the skill set would be different then most likely the person whose skills fit the job best would be chosen.
    In the most severe example if you look for character artist and you get two application where one person knows character design 50% and follage 50% while the other one is 100% you'd pick the one that knows character design best (this was hypothetical knowledge, not portfolio work distribution).
