I've always been fascinated by environment designers, specifically Sci Fi ones. They always seem to have something connecting the scene together, and it never ever feels empty. I've heard of the process of "blocking out" a scene, where primitives are used to hold positions before you replace them with actual assets. I was wondering if somebody could give me some advice on blocking out/environment design, or point me in the direction of tutorials/videos that may help me out. I'm thinking about making my next portfolio piece some sort of "escape room" type thing, and I'd love to learn how to make environments like the pros.
Right now, I'm just pulling pieces and parts from other people's stuff that I've seen and trying to make it fit with my own stuff, but it never quite looks right, and I'd like to be coming up with my own ideas, 100%, if possible.
