Recommended Reading on Decal / Sprint Creation

Does anyone have any recommended reading on some processes and working methods for creating decals / sprites that would be used for explosives damage, bullet holes, creators etc I thought this would be quite a common thing but spending some time on google not much is really cropping up.

I've always worked in fairy large studios before and there has always been someone that specializes in creating this kind of content. 

The best example I can find is in this DOTA 2 mapping video in which he describes them as "Path Overlays"  which are stampted over the terrain to add detail. Seems like a great technique that I want to explore further.
