figured out a decent method for getting nice sand dunes in world machine, hope this helps

ok so if you're trying to generate sand dunes like in homeworld: deserts of kharak, the key is to start with voronoi noise (or a repeating gradient if you want a more directional effect) and then apply a simple displacement with relatively smooth noise on it. (if you're in a newer version of world machine, you need to make a displacement node and then right click and change the device version to 2x.) the rest of what im doing is just doing pretty basic modifications. the only weird thing i think im doing really is selecting lower heights and blurring them a bit to make a contrast in shape from the crests of the dunes. i should also note it's important to render the heightmap at a high resolution like 4k in order to preserve the nice crisp edges on the dune crests.
