[Maya] Using the UV Editor for Modelling Purposes?

Hi, 

I almost always use the UV editor for modeling especially for selecting edges in deep corners. 
My question is can this be taken further?

Currently, I select vertices then perform various commands such as merge vertices, etc. Works in the UV editor.
But when I select the target weld tool, I can't do it in the UV editor, I have to go the regular viewport. 

It would be nice if it was also possible in the UV editor as it is to easy to see things laid out.

Is there a way around this or any plug-in the allows this?
