Yeah you are right about both of those things, The extra polycount on the top areas to to preserve some angles i had going but looking back at it i think it pay be overboard. The bottom one was simply a mistake that i overlooked for no reason, it was connecting the bottom section with the leg. I was thinking of making LOD's anyway so i might have this poly reduction as part of that pass.
In terms of the leg widthyou are right but i think i might do that sometime, i just dont want to redo a bunch of texturing right now.
I did use a high poly and bake but i cannot achieve the profile change with that. If you take a look at the close up of the wireframe you can see what is happening. I agree that i can remove the middle edge loop but overall i dont see what geometry to remove and keep the shape right, for an LOD that would be the first thing to go.
