I'm trying to make a Boyd's-style wood for my AK model in substance. I'm really not sure where to start since i'm new to Substance painter and designer. I'm trying to follow Chamfer Zone's Ultimate Weapon Tutorial while giving it my own spin so that I'll learn things on my own.

A 3d noise with wacky scaling settings will get you a good base for this.
