Generating consistent interstitial thickness for different tile shapes?

I have a couple of related but separate questions for generating tile patterns that allow for customization in the number and shape of tiles.

1) How do I get a consistent interstitial thickness when changing from 10 x 10 to 5 x 10, for example? I'm trying to avoid the interstices between the tiles being thicker along one axis and thinner along the other. Do I need to create a function that scales the interstices based on the ratio of tiles in one direction to the other, or is there a simpler means?

2) I've been using the bevel node to create round bevels on my tiles, but it seems to eat into the interstitial space of the tile pattern, so that if I up the tile amount too much the bevel makes the tiles merge together. Is there an easy way to avoid? I.e, how do I confine the bevel to being within the tiles while retaining the same appearance?
