Maya - How to fix this geometry/lighting issue?

I'm fairly new to the Maya scene, so bear with me. I'm encountering this issue whenever I try to use the Quad Draw tool to clean up my geometry (I'm not even sure that is the right tool to use in this case). It seems like whenever I try to fix them, I start to get fly-away edges/vertices and no matter where I look inside the mesh, the polygons/faces are nowhere to be found. Can anyone tell me how to fix this and explain what it is that I'm doing wrong?

You must have softened the edges. A softened edge at 90 degree bend will have this error.

Go to mesh display > unlock normals. That should fix it.

Then, check out the Maya documentation about soften/harden edges to understand why this happens.

I actually did what you told me to do and that fixed some of it and after selecting the entire thing again, I just clicked on harden edges and that fixed the problem!

I'll be looking at the documentation to understand why this happens.

    Thank you, kind sir!

Yeah, I realize I forgot to mention that after you unlock the normals, you'll need to harden them. But you got it.
