Is there any way to avoid this? I have a model which works perfectly with pins that always stay where I put them but in this model I'm unwrapping now it's a nightmare to keep them in place.
In the Peel rollout of the UV editor make sure to disable 'avoid overlap'. At least this is what I took from your phrasing.

Thanks for answering but sadly I get the exact same results with avoid overlap off. I also just uploaded a video showing what I get when I move around my pins.
Also don't mind the fact I'm "texturing" the model by moving shells over a render, there's a purpose for that.

I can't reproduce here on 2018.4. Peel mode works perfectly. My guess is that it's because you're on 2017. That version absolutely f**cked the Unwrap modifier. Are you using the latest update?

Okay I fixed it in a way I could've never imagined.
For WHATEVER reason having a background image on the UV editor with an aspect ratio other than 1x1 causes peel pins to do some weird adjustment whenever you move them.
