Hello everyone,
I'm a beginner and I am watching tutorials to try to learn a "workflow" from modelling to texturing to rendering.
At the moment I am stuck at UVing my model... Here is my problem :
In the tutorial I am watching, the teacher is showing how to UV a pillar (so we can texture it later).
He uses the "hypershade" window in Autodesk Maya like that
http://prntscr.com/k3y2gj and then he "applies" his UV on his pillar like this :
https://prnt.sc/k3y2nr (from what i see in the tutorial, all he does is drag the material he created and then drop it on his pillar he modeled and the pillar becomes covered in those black and white squares.)
My problem is that i did everything like him and when i try to drag and drop the texture on my pillar like he did, the pillar just becomes slightly darker (it goes from a light gray to a darker gray) but no black and white squares appear like in the tutorial... Here is what I have :
https://prnt.sc/k3y41gI'm a noob and I have absolutly no idea what i did wrong.
If anyone could help me i would be very thankful!
Replies
It worked http://prntscr.com/k4elew
I've been searching for a solutions for hours ;-;
Thanks again !
I now have a new problem ><
I was able to UV my pillar by following the tutorial. This is my pillar after doing the UVs : https://prnt.sc/k6moip
But if i want to copy paste this pillar in different areas in my scene, some of the UV dont stay in place...
Here is what happens : https://prnt.sc/k6mp30
And here is how it looks in the UV editor :
Those are the "glitchy" parts of the pillar :
https://prnt.sc/k6mpfg
Those are the "normal" parts (i am able to copy paste them around my scene without any problems) :
http://prntscr.com/k6mpmi
I really dont understand why some parts of the pillar are doing fine while others get all glitchy when i copy paste my pillar in my scene ?
If anyone knows what is happening, let me know.
Thanks in advance !
In the tutorial I am following the teacher is also showing how to do UVs in 3DCoat so I UVed a door on that software.
My problem is that when I want to put my door back into Maya (I click on import -> I select by obj file from 3Dcoat) all i get is an error message : http://prntscr.com/k7mzn8
Whata did I do wrong ? I followed what the teacher did so I really don't see why I can't open my door into Maya right now.
If anyone could help
Thanks in advance !
If the error line in google doesn't get you an answer, then you start getting creative with your wording. Try to phrase the problem as many ways as you can and search each phrase.
3dcoat to Maya obj problem.... 3dcoat to maya can't import.... maya obj not found issue.... etc etc
Learning how to search like this is going to make you 1000% better at self learning. People want to know, how long does it take to learn ____ program. The answer is, how good are you at using google?
Try to import the file from 3d coat into a new Maya scene. Also check out the outliner to see what nodes are or aren't imported.
I always try to find a solution by myself before coming to polycount.
I did type that error into google and I obtained a few solutions, which I've tried, and they did not work (I was still getting the same error line and it was still impossible for me to have my door model back into maya).
I also tried to search what could go wrong when importing something from 3DCoat to autodesk maya and nothing seemed to apply to my problem. As I am really a beginner I think I probably changed something in the parameters of 3Dcoat without realising it or something like that
So yea, I am always coming on polycount after trying to solve the problem by myself. I am usually able to solve most problems by myself but as it is my first time using 3Dcoat I really have no clue what to do at this point (as I already tried plenty of stuff and none of them worked).
@m4dcow Thanks for your answer too!
I already tried to open it in a new maya scene and it did not work sadly.
I didn't know the outliner even existed, so thanks for making me discover that. Apparently some parts of the door are imported while some others are not : http://prntscr.com/k824m7 sooo i guess that some parts are maybe corrupted or something ?
Honestly at this point I think I will just re-build the door, re-UV it in 3Dcoat and pray for the best when time comes to import it into Maya haha.
You'll have to retrace your steps one by one. Start at exporting from Maya to 3dcoat. How did you export it. Then, what did you do in 3dcoat. Then, how did you move it from 3dcoat back to maya. As a beginner, you probably won't recognize the possible error somewhere in that timeline, but if you can build that timeline and present it to others, that will make troubleshooting much easier. You might also try the Maya AREA forums, and probably 3dcoat has something similar. Maya keeps a few very experienced troubleshooters around just to help people out with situations like this at their forums, and they typically respond within a day or two if you provide them good info. They've helped me a few times when I was totally "stuck."
So here is what I did by following the tutorial I'm watching :
1/ In Maya :
So I built my door into Maya : http://prntscr.com/k839ds
Then I "separated" all the pieces of the door because in the tutorial it was said that each part needed to be UVed individually : http://prntscr.com/k839og
I selected all the pieces of my door, then i went to "File" -> "Export selection".
It got saved on my computer as an OBJ file : http://prntscr.com/k83a6b
2/ In 3DCoat :
I launched 3DCoat (I have a free version, the one with the 30 days trials. I don't think this has anything to do with my problem but you never know : http://prntscr.com/k83b2p )
I clicked on "UV map mesh" : http://prntscr.com/k83b8r and select my OBJ door http://prntscr.com/k83bg2
This window poped on the screen, I had no idea what all those things were so I just clicked on the "ok" button : http://prntscr.com/k83bmx
My door then appeared in the 3Dcoat viewer : http://prntscr.com/k83c5b
The instructor said to click on "Clear Seams" so our model isn't "unwrapped" yet : http://prntscr.com/k83cca So I clicked on "clear seams" and all my door parts are now made of only one color : http://prntscr.com/k83ct5
I then started to UV everything by clicking on an edge and holding shift to UV my small door parts : https://prnt.sc/k83d38
Here is the finished UVed door in 3DCoat : http://prntscr.com/k83fxw (I did the exact same UV as the instructor)
The instructor then said to hit the "Unwrap" button, which I did : http://prntscr.com/k83gh6 Here is the result : http://prntscr.com/k83gp5 I think that there may be weird stuff going on here : http://prntscr.com/k83gzk (i don't know, why are some part all red and twisted ? Might be a problem ?)
The instructor has the same weird stuff on his screen : http://prntscr.com/k83hf4 (that's a pic from the tutorial I'm watching, it's what the instructor has on its screen). But after a second everything is clear again : http://prntscr.com/k83hxr So maybe he did something off camera that he is not showing us in the tutorial ?
Then he clicks on "Apply UV set" : http://prntscr.com/k83if2
He then goes to "File" -> "Export objects and textures" : http://prntscr.com/k83iur This window appears on my screen, idk what to do with it so I just click "ok" http://prntscr.com/k83j0i
I then save my UVed door as an OBJ like the instructor did : http://prntscr.com/k83jlw
3/ Back to Maya :
I go to "File" -> "Import" and select my obj : http://prntscr.com/k83ke8 http://prntscr.com/k83kk5
That's when I get my error message : http://prntscr.com/k83kq1
Soo, I just re did everything to screenshot what I was doing while doing it and I got the exact same error... I mean, I really don't know what else to do ? T_T
I will also post my question on the autodesk maya, that's a great idea !
https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/maya-modeling/error-hikcharactercontrolsui-mel-line-329/td-p/7101141
Seems like a likely solution for you as well. I don't know MEL (maya's scripting language), but this error code has something to do with humanIK, which is a rigging thing inside maya. Totally unrelated to what you've been working on. So it seems like just some weird thing that would be fixed by resetting your preferences, as explained how to do in the link.
I think I had to do that once or twice as well when I was working through tutorials in maya.
WOW thank you so much !
I did it one time, it didn't work. I closed maya and tried it one more time just in case and it worked
So it was just a random bug right ? I could have been stuck for ages haha.
Thanks again !

"corrupted elements" I guess. However, seeing how I had issues like this a couple times when I was doing beginner tutorials, but I haven't had any issues like this lately, I'd suspect it was me corrupting the elements, just by nature of clunking around like a bull in a china shop, not having much of a clue what most the buttons I'm clicking are doing.
By the way, that was the first item in a google search I did. I just typed in your error code. Not copy paste the entire thing, just type in the keyword and the code, and "maya." Usually, when google searching, i write the program name, and if it's an error code like this, I try to trim it down to just the keywords. Seems to get better results that way. Fishing from a larger pool.
Unrelated side note : While you're learning to do UV's, check out Maya 2018. It's got really nice UV tools. The Maya learning channel on youtube has some decent tutorials for unwrapping game characters and props.
Okay thanks !
I found threads similar to this one while searching for a solution but, even though people were getting the same error line as mine, they were getting it in a different context (for example : the error was appearing when they were trying to undo something) so i thought it had nothing to do with my problem.
And yea I probably corrupted my model by clicking on random stuff here and there but every noob has to learn the hard way what to do and what not to do haha.
I will check out Maya 2018 then UVing seems to be much easier in 3DCoat though.
The UVs I did i 3DCoat are looking very weird in the Maya UV editor : http://prntscr.com/k8ju46 http://prntscr.com/k8jubg I don't know if it's normal ?
I think I will just let it like that for the moment and see where things went wrong later when I will apply textures on my door.
I just mention to check out Maya's UV tools because, 1. you are already using Maya, and 2. they're really more than adequate. I tried out several third party tools for UV's because people said they were better, but honestly I haven't used one that is better than Mayas. I think in the past, Maya had pretty bad tools, but I don't think that's the case anymore. And, as you are learning right now, the more programs you introduce into the workflow, the more work you have to do to keep them all playing along nicely. Of course, once you know how to do, it's no big deal, so ultimately use whichevere tools work best for you.
I think that what i have is maya2017 so that's why UVs are so hard to do in my version of Maya...
I dont know if maya2018 is available for free on the autodesk website but i will try to find it.
Assuming you are using the student version of 2017, you can do the same with 2018 or any other versions.
