Just started working on this Chest and was hoping to get some progress feedback and suggestions. I am new to Polycount so I apologize if I am posting this in the wrong location.
The wood in particular doesn't look good if you just carve lines into a flat surface. Use Clay Buildup to rough up the surface of the wood, then use hPolish to flatten it. That's how I got the wood here. Remember when doing that to maintain the flow of the grain.
^second what @Zack Maxwell said and I'd say your metal needs a bit of love too. Its looking a bit plastaceny and I think maybe you need to harden some of the edges with H polish and then add dents and a couple scratches after. Don't dent every edge just ones where damage would happen
Hey guys, thanks for all the suggestions and ways to get there. Brian, I loosely based the chest on various images of real chests to get an idea for my own concept. I will definitely try the clay buildup and hard polish for the wood and transfer that to the metal as well.
You're gonna want to look at reference for this, especially since there's really nicely done chests done before. You've got metal edge faceting in places where it shouldn't be as dense since it's not in contact with the environment as often.
hey everyone, I have been experimenting with the techniques that you have all suggested and I can definitely see the differences already. Brian, the link you gave me is really helpful. I will re-sculpt the metal keeping that in mind more. I am loving how my wood is turning out but have yet to get into the smaller details for it.
Please let me know what you all think about my progress and if anyone has further suggestions. Also, I have been looking around for solid hard surface brushes. if anyone has a link of where I can download some, please help me out; currently just working with the orb crack custom brush, but have been seeing a lot of useful brushes in tutorials that I would definitely benefit from.
I'd say the crevices in the wood are much too deep. You should try to let the flow of the ClayBuildup strokes define the crevices between them, and use a bit of DamStandard to help define them.

Don't ignore existing render targets.

Your wood looks bad still. The cuts are too uniform in size, width, and depth.
