How do I control the twist of extruded edges along a curve?

When I extrude a selection of edges along a curve the edges will twist in various ways along the curve. Here is the problem that I am talking about:
Is there any way for me to control that twist or at a minimum have it aligned with one of the view planes i.e flat in the side/front view?
