Motion path animations in Maya?

I followed this tutorial how to create a chain using motion paths. But now I need to make that chain move around the motion path

I have my chain in a closed curve that I need to animate around the closed curve. Sort of like a belt moving in a car engine. It's not a perfect circle, or else that would be easy. Unfortunately the curve the chain needs to animate around is an oval shape. I've tried messing with Curve Warp and didn't get anywhere. 

Any suggestions?

Thanks, but thats using Motion Paths. I couldn't get that to work since it's a closed loop and the chain is a full connected oval. Unless Im missing something and not seeing a certain setting or something. I messed around with Motion Paths for a good 45 minutes yesterday, no luck.

fake it... dont close the curve and overlap it...

Tried that as well. It would only move a fraction of an inch and wouldn’t go around in a loop as expected. Am I missing a setting?
