Max Hotkeys - Alt - less

Hi,

Setting up Max 2019 - trying to set some hotkeys. In other versions I've been able to use characters without alt+ - don't seem to be able to do so now or I've forgotten the trick to it. For example I like the "," to convert to editable poly and other single characters for other actions. Now it's putting alt+ in front of everything I try to add. So is there a trick to this or did they change something?

Is it possible that the new version has Keyboard Shortcut Override turned off? It's the button in the main toolbar that looks like a box/key with a up arrow on it.
