Zbrush cutting and other questions

Longtime user of Zbrush, although I was on a long break so I've forgotten a few things. Youtube helped with some of it but since I'm deaf, some of the captions/subs were weird or not helpful.
1- How do I cut objects? The slice/trim/clip tools don't appear to work anymore. All they do is mask the subtool. I probably toggled a feature/tool that disabled cutting.
2- How do I enable local symmetry for newly created subtools like the premade sphere? When I press Mirror, then try L Sym and work on it, it doesn't work symmetrically.
3- What is the difference between document saving, subtool saving, and file saving?
4- Apparently I can't edit obj files that i load, the Edit button is greyed out
