Well that kind of came outta nowhere...I sill remember back when Square Eni said they were dissatisfied with the sales of the first game and yet, here we are at the third title...
near the end her face looks a bit weird, like a mans face. whole thing looks a little grim to me, still prefer the older style where she was a more of a female james bond with a wry sense of humour

Agreed. The only reason I pay attention to the new Tomb Raider games is I like the art, but Laura Croft herself is boring as can be. The original Laura was really over the top in a lot of ways, but that's what made her fun and interesting.
I like the James Bond analogy, considering the character's genesis was a counter stereotypical female portrayal of the 'page 3 girl' of the time via the team and Toby Gard at Core Design. So truth be told, I reckon this latest Square iteration intuitively develops her biography further quite nicely plus of course alongside eyewateringly gorgeous art.
i think it's also due to her ever shifting looks. looking at the newer titles the face seems to change with every release (compare with the 2013 game for starters). throw in cover art like the above, the occasional release with stylized graphics and the new actress from the movie and you end up with a face less recognizable than her hairstyle.
Comparison of Laura that was posted on ResetEra for SotTR vs RotTR:
If the goal with Lauras new model is to make her look more athletic, why doesn't she have abs? Her arms look stronger, but her torso just looks thicker (which consequently seems to make her head look smaller).
i would imagine it's actually fading in another normal map that has alternate musculature/fat positioning etc (see: red dead redemption horses in motion musculature undulation)
Studying the RotTR v SotTR pic, the latter's 'solid' build would seem TBH addon a few years when compared too the former, which the character is supposed to be aged 21.
The game is looking good. It is good they are going back to the Tomb Raider roots. More puzzles, more traps, more exploration. I didn't enjoy too much on the rail gameplay. I wish they would push the environments a bit more. Although those tombs are looking great
I feel that the biggest thing holding most AAA games back is the writing. Graphics are getting astoundingly beautiful, game design hyper polished, but the writing still feels very amateurish in most of the major titles. I understand, writing and dialogue in games is still very new, compared to literature and film. It has to contend with a lot more. But, it still feels like games that get the best artist, designers, and programmers, end up with writers not up to the same caliber. Maybe I am way off, and the challenge of writing for games is way over my head.
Maybe the writing works for the target audience, who is likely younger. But for me, the single biggest turn off in most games is bad writing, corny dialogue, etc. Anybody know, what percentage of budgets typically go towards writing versus other departments?

Before you get into it, please play this through once:
Well, I played through that, though about half way through I just couldn't take it anymore and clicked the rest of the way through. Is this meant to tell the writers point of view on a project? The impression I got was that the team had serious management and communication problems, which inhibited clear, decisive direction and so everybody just kind of muddled their way through until the end. Maybe I'm not in the right mood to digest this, but I found the entire thing pretty hard to follow.
Was that the point? To say that, poor communication and management makes the writers job impossible?
just finished rise of the tomb raider, good game! So i'm looking forward to Shadow of the TR. My main problem with both of the previous games was the script, it begins so good, explorations, puzzles and gorgeous visuals. And at the end, i just felt like Michael Bay had a hand in the last part. Explosions, Explosions, Explosions and Explosions. Hope that's fixed for the Shadow of TR.

I'm not sure I'd call that poor management and poor communication. It's called politics, and it's at every game studio over 100 people.
Too many cooks in the kitchen, I guess. Not necessarily anybody doing a poor job, just an issue of not having a clear, focused vision shared by all team members.
Even working on a two person team, this is an issue that can easily arise and be hard to spot and mitigate. No doubt getting 100 + people to all work towards a cohesive vision is probably a much greater challenge than making the parts of the game alone.
Anyone having issues with the game performance with the latest nvidia driver? I updated it today, and before that I had a very solid > 60 fps performance on maxed out settings on 1080p on a gtx 1080 and after updating, I'm barely hitting 40. Good thing, I already played it through.
edit - I removed the latest driver and its running as expected again. So if you want to play this game, don't update to the latest driver.

Good job to those who bossed on this.
Tombraider:Colonizer
But the newer incarnation of Tomb Raider sells like 20x more than the old ones.
Not sure if Blur used the same model as we did in-game, but the face can seem to change a lot based on how their animators used the blendshapes.
i love her 2013 look though, but the game was a bit stressful

Anyways, the game looks cool.

Overall animation is jerky, lacks polish, rigid and looks dated..like a past gen game..

...... Dude, my dream of working in game studio just died a little bit after playing that web novel game...
