This 3ds Max copy issue is about to drive me nuts!

I posted something on this before, went to the Autodesk 3DS Max forums asking about it, it has been a month later and I still don't know what the heck is wrong with this...

What is supposed to happen is that I will create a 2x4, take that 2x4 and make a copy of it, with that copy make more copies and build a building, then I unwrap the original and take it into Substance Painter or Quixel and texture it, but when I do this I get 1000 tiny versions of the unwrapped board on all of my boards. Basically everything I do will not fix it, I have tried instances, they don't work because the other boards become useless because I cant modify them, I have tried reference and that does not work, then I try copy and I get the same freaking result 3 times, I can take this same board out of Max and then try it again, again, and again and I keep getting the same result, a useless board which means I cant build anything without having to unwrap myself to death.

If I just use instances I cant model my object. Copy doesn't work, the textures get messed up, Reference, no clue what that does, but it doesn't work either. What else is there?

What am I doing wrong? How do I fix this? Because so far no one knows, I have read everything, listened to people, and they say there should not be any issues but I keep having this problem which has become a massive roadblock.

You should unwrap the original before copying it... how would the others know it was unwrapped after being copied?

It's likely just the order in which you're doing things. Got TeamViewer?

YES!!! You are my new hero!

That fixed it, I would have never thought of that being the issue, there were so many possibilities I was just guessing away. Something like that is just hard to communicate in text, I need to find an instructor or pay a tutor or something to help me learn some of this stuff, sometimes I get hung up on a process like this and have no one in person or video to ask about. I couldn't find any videos or anything on HOW to actually do this, I just needed that tidbit of technical information.

    Thanks again!

I have one last question regarding this. So I know how to copy it now, but when I UV unwrap 2 different boards and bring them out to Substance Painter for some reason it wants to add the same details when I paint to all of them.

This is hard to explain. In the picture above I UV Unwrapped the bottom left and bottom right boards separately, I collapsed the UV's then copied the second upper boards over. I painted on the bottom left board but it added the same detail to the ones on the right which were separately UV'd.

    Why is this?

EDIT: Never mind, I tried it again found out I did something wrong with the UV so it is fine now.

    Thanks

use references instead of instances - they maintain the link between underlying instance objects but you can put  modifiers on top.
