RampShader in Maya and gamma correction (mental ray)

So I'm trying to get a nice render using Mental ray and a toon shaded style.
It's not quite there yet.
And part of this is I think Gamma correction.
This is how I've linked up my gamma correct to my ramp shader (to the ambient colour, because otherwise theres 2 or 3 different colours to add it to and neither of these set ups seem to make any difference anyway.)



How my model appears (with and without gamma).


Also I any design tips would be appreciated.
I know its not a great mode, its for a company, and I was going to create hair but I only have a few days to finish this and hair was causing me so many issues (using groomable xgen generated.)
If anyone can suggest a super simple set up that might look better that would be good :(
