I was wondering if, apart from the gel feature, if its possible to assign an image to a light so that the spec reflection on object will be that of the image?
We've got light gels, and then if you want to load a custom image for the sky light you can do that by clicking on the sky object and hitting the image button. We support all the standard HDRI formats.
There isn't a way to map an image to a specific light other than light gels though.
thanks! I used gel images...its a nice feature to have for lighting. I was more curious about mapping the light with an image which would then be reflected by specular objects (without using sky lights)
If you want to adjust the specular light reflection, you can use the width setting to enable area lights. The bigger the width the larger the reflection. This is helpful for mimicking large, diffused studio lights for instance. It will blur the shadows as well.
thanks! I do use those settings as well to simulate rectangular softboxes..but I wondered if there was a way to simulate other type of studio lights by mapping the lights with their actual hdr pics (umbrellas, ring flash, dish lights etc)
Sure, there's nothing like that built into Toolbag, but you could try using HDR Light Studio to make a custom HDRI, there's all sorts of options for different light types, umbrellas, etc. https://www.lightmap.co.uk/
