Using curve to place hair card in Maya (Max path deform binding / Maya Curve Wrap)

Hello, I recently watched a hair tutorial, it was using Max's Path Deform Binding(WSM) to place hair card. Obviously, he was duplicating each card after he place it, and tweak the curve for next one. I'm a Maya user so I wanted to apply this method using Curve Wrap and it can perform similar thing for the first card but I can't duplicate each card with it's own curve after placement. I'm not familiar with deform and animation so I guess there is something I'm missing here. I tried grouping and parenting it but still not there yet. Anyone know what I'm missing here? Thanks :)

Have you checked out the bonus tools? They have a nice "ribbon mesh" feature that you can add to a selection of curves like so:

Thank you for suggestion, but it was about copying deformer with the object at the same time and make the copy still work afterward. watching your link let me discover some other keywords and eventually I solved the issue :D I had to duplicate special rather than just duplicate it. I even discovered how to set aim curve so all I gotta do is working on my hair. Thank you for taking your time!

Created a video on the curve warp for stylized hair not too long ago.

I have upated my workflow since then.

I create all of the curves first and then duplicate my original hair geo/strip, so i have enough objects to use on the curves.

I watched your tutorial, thank you for sharing it :) I'm gonna use it to low poly hair cards but at first I couldn't figure out how to duplicate it after placement. Now I know I have to use duplicate special, will update my process if I get into other troubles.

Sounds like a pain of a workflow but if that works for you, then cool :)

Hello, It seems that what you were trying to accomplish is exactly what I'm struggling with at the moment. Was the tutorial that you watched made by Georgian Avasilcutei by any chance? But this is beside the point. I was wondering if you are willing to help me out with this process in Maya.

I am trying to find the "Path Deform Binding(WSM)" equivalent in Maya to place hair cards. I have been trying to use the "wire tool" but It has been less than ideal. I can understand that you are using a "curve warp" and the "duplicate special". But this is where my knowledge ends. I am really struggling with getting the "curve warp" to work on a hair card (as I have no experience with this method). The hair cards either gets scaled or isn't aligned with the curve at all, its nothing like the video that is linked in this post. I was wondering if you could perhaps explain your workflow in getting the "curve warp" to work on hair cards? I'm most likely not understanding something... Thanks!

I'm going through the exact same thing right now, however, duplicate special has not helped me in fixing the problem. I have tried using duplicate special on the object and the curve and also using it on a group. Am I missing something?

I have just figured out what I was missing: You need to enable "Duplicate Input Graph" for Duplicate Special.
