i recieved a job in wich i have to fix this mesh in order to properly unwrap it and map the textures on it, i am not used to this kind of job, i always create the models from scratch, any suggestion on how to do this in a time efficient way? in this example i've already applied an option within blender called Tris to quads and tinkered with the operator options and this is more or less the best result i've got

Not sure if Blender has that capability, but I do that In Modo all the time. really speeds up the process.
You could also use 3D coat. That program is really nice for uvs, especially weird ones like this.
