Hi! Please help, I am trying to solve the problem and I can't do it.
I am creating some terrain in world machine. Then I get diff, displacement, normal, .. maps which I am using in 3ds Max.
The slopes are steep and I have to deal with some ugly bitmap distortions.
1. solution - Vray 3 planar tex -I do not have it in my Vray version, so I won't be able to use it.
2. new 3ds max 2017 has some solution - blended mapping, but my 3ds max is old, so I won't be able to use that.
I did not find any other solution for 3ds max. Please help! Is there any other way I could use tri planar mapping in 3ds max or some other technique to avoid diffuse map stretches with mountain terrain?

You want a mask based on slope angle and then you can use a planar map for the horizontal surfaces and a cylindrical map for the verticals.
How you handle the material bit depends on your target renderer
If you bought V-Ray you have access to the latest version, even on older versions of Max.
