Developing the Strategic Combat game for Star Wars: Jedi Challenges
Blind Squirrel Games in collaboration with Disney and Lucasfilm developed the Strategic Combat game for Star Wars: Jedi Challenges. It was an honor for our studio to work on this high profile game. We are proud to show some of the assets we’ve done for the game as well as briefly touch upon the process.
Some of the programs we used for our process were Maya, Substance Painter and 3D Coat. Maya to model and UV. We used Substance Painter to texture some hard surface assets, and heavily relied on 3D Coat to hand paint textures for characters, vehicles and environment assets. Photoshop was used very sparingly.
The process of pre-production for this project was very experimental. We had to bring together characters, vehicles and locations from across all the mediums and create a unified look. One of the most challenging parts of this process was translating iconic characters from Star Wars Rebels show to the style that we were trying to achieve. The added difficulty was because the show characters did not have a cinematic counterpart. We typically used film actors as reference, without that for Rebels, we had to rely on Lucasfilm to provide guidance. Our goal was to strike a balance between high detail and readability because of the AR platform. We also took cues from the toys for exaggerating proportions, making sure that certain forms were more readable while staying authentic to the Star Wars brand. The end result was a balance between the visual charm of Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars film universe to create a unique style for the game.
