Before exporting from Maya do I have to always put lamberts to objects to separate them or can I just use collage UVs? If so how can I work with collage UVs in Substance Painter? Thanks in advance!
If you are using UVs, then all of your UVs have to be in 0 to 1 to texture in substance painter. Although I think Painter now support UDIMs. If you want pieces in separate texture sets within Painter, you need to assign different shader in maya. You can also separate areas within the same texture set using an ID map.
The color ID map will allow you to apply different materials to different areas. If you need to use more materials then your color ID map supplies, you can always create more masks manually in Painter. I usually do all 3: color ID map, texture sets, and some manual masking.
