Modular Development!! Earliest game?

I'm trying to find the earliest game who used Modular workflow and how its progressed to now, has anyone stumbled across anything? 

I'm doing a research thesis on Modular construction so anything would be a big help right now!

Start checking games by date, check gameplay and levels, purchase one if you'd like it. All games have modularity, you cannot possibly have the entire world build from different objects. Are you really doing a thesis? It does not sound convincing

Tetris is pretty modular...

Even a lot of those turn based games or world managment like Civilization, Simcity, The Incredible Machine etc.

or
... really every game is more or less modular. How else would you build a game world? What a useless thesis.

Maybe you should refine your definition a bit. Perhaps you mean 3D modularity. 2D games have been doing it since the inception of pixel art.

Well, true but you don't have to be degrading about it. This is the research section of where it became classified as a workflow?

I'm trying to get pure evidence of explanation so it can be in the research part, sort of a timeline if preferred.

Wow. Is it that difficult to find? I think you're going to have a difficult time researching your paper if it's difficult for you to find our wiki! If you do manage to find it, Modular would probably be a good search term to start with.
