Little bit of an update, I need to/want to model everything that needs modelling properly in max before I really go in on the details so I think that's next up!
Looking great Hazel! Love the clothes and the accsesories, mostly everything about it. The only critique I have is that the belt, the big one on top of the one for the scabbard. Looks a bit wobbly, while in concept it looks more sturdy.
@Gabriel_Salazar Thankyou! Totally with you on the belt, its a bit of a mush atm, I started it and then abandoned it so I'll make sure I don't miss it when I go back over everything
Almost ready to wrap this up and do all the tiny details unless there's anything really bad that needs pointing out! Still noodling on the face, getting increasingly frustrated with it so I'm about ready to put my hands up and leave it as is. Definitely going to be focusing on studies for a while after this to fill in the gaps in my knowledge!
The mace and arrows are still block meshes for now till I model them properly (definitely putting that off....)
Just wanted to pipe in and say the face is looking noticeably better than before, @HazelTheHobbit! It's great that you kept pushing through and improving on the sculpt; I think it definitely paid off. Looking forward to her low poly and the textures (unless you end up working on any other parts before then). I bet those normal maps are going to turn out great when you're baking them down.
Nice progress! I have to say I really liked the double stripe at the bottom of the tunic in the original design, it cut off the pattern nicely... Also the red of the stones is a bit too much of a coral imo, a more ruby red on the jewels will work better with the rest of the color scheme.
@Intervain Thankyou! Yes me too, I want to really go into the detail/embroidery of the dress so hopefully I'll get it looking a lot better soon Also I agree about the jewels! I'll see what I can do with them
Some little progress updates, really struggling with the gems- anyone know of a good shader set up for a semi transparent precious gem kinda thing? Think I'm gonna attempt some hair next to take a rest from the textures and help me visualize her overall look better. Still considering it at very early stages though!
Slow progress on the hair! Working stuff out as I go so there's a lot of trial and error! Very slowly starting to get it going in a direction that's kinda sorta okay. There's a lot of cards that are looking like hair cards at the moment and tonnes more work to do but I'm determined to make it look at least half decent eventually
have you played with refraction in marmoset for the gems? Not sure you're using marmoset but just thought I'd throw it out there https://youtu.be/AJIn_44oiLM?t=340
Looking pretty good. The necklace is stealing a little bit too much focus for me. Looks maybe too flat, or too saturated. I'm really liking where the hair is going.
@Intervain I am using marmoset! Planning to try the refraction soon! @David-J Thankyou! Totally agree, gonna try this refraction and that should hopefully help a bunch
Those scars look great from a closer view, and it looks like your hair cards are really coming out nicely. Big fan of the clothing patterns on the sleeves and trim as well. Can't wait to see how she looks with the finished hair cards and added gem refractions!
Some progress! Pleased with the direction the hair is going still but I can see plenty of room for improvement. Put in some lashes and some refraction on the gems (they look so much better now!) Going to take a break from the hair to do some work on the rest of her textures!
Really love seeing the progress you've made on this model, it's looking really good! Her neck area looks a little washed out and pale in comparison to her face, though you might just not have gotten round to that bit yet. I'd just expect that as an archer she would catch the sun a bit more on her exposed skin, so would maybe have more of a golden glow to her? And perhaps a few freckles on her neck and chest as well as a healthier rosy pink lip colour. (Unless she's wearing lipstick). Love how you've done the eye make-up, it's hard to be subtle with smoky black but you've pulled it off really well. I look forward to seeing the final result!
@Echo864 Thankyou! Totally agree with you on the skin! I plan to go back and do another pass on her face but I think I would have totally missed her neck and chest if you hadn't pointed it out :P
Progress updates! Bits and pieces and a basic dirt pass. Really pleased with the direction this is going in, just wish I had more time than the evenings after work and weekends to work on it!
Some updates! Jumped ahead to rigging because I wanted to visualize the final a bit better. Not really sure how I'm feeling about it at the moment- definitely getting tired of this project, been working on it for a while now and I'm starting to see the cracks and improvements that need making. Stuck her cape on straight out of MarvD so I can start thinking about how I'm going to do that. Pose still needs some tweaks to match the concept and I want to do another pass on the lighting too. She also needs some arrows in her quiver and her mace! Not sure what I'm going to do about the bow yet!
@HazelTheHobbit She looks fantastic! I particularly love the cloth detailing on the skirt and tunic. Do you have any resources/tutorials that you'd particularly recommend for learning Xgen hair? I've tried and abandoned it so many times after Xgen's frequent crashes...
@alange Thankyou! I'm afraid I don't, we learned it at work through a lot of trial and error I've had quite a few people ask me though so I'm considering doing a project focused on hair that I'll try and turn into a simple Xgen tutorial
Not much to update, blocked in some of the weapons and done some tweaking on the pose etc, starting to consider what my final screenshots will look like whilst dragging my feet doing the final weapons haha. Definitely need some more work on the lighting. Let me know what you think!
And she's done! Ended up being not so happy with how she turned out; lots of things I would do differently looking back but I wanted to wrap it up and move onto smaller scale projects and studies. Thankyou to everyone for their feedback along the way! https://www.artstation.com/artwork/dX0yA
