Hello everybody,
I'm another first timer here on the Polycount forums. I really loved looking through the contest entries last time and I'm glad I'll get to participate this time around. I picked Karthus because.. he's evil and cool. Just seemed like a good fit.
Anyways I'm always open to feedback in my artwork, be it words or paintover. I'm here to get better, make some great art, and have fun!
I started off by doing some quick studies of all the current Karthus Splash art. You know, just see what already exists. Then from there did a few thumbnails trying to get the same feeling, but changing up the image. I noticed none of the previous splashes had a strong top-down or bottom-up angle, so I decided to try some of those.
After that I picked my favorite three and fleshed them out a little more. I haven't decided which one to go forward with so feel free to let me know what you like. Maybe the lighting in one would be cooler on a different angle. I dunno. I'll probably build some of these parts out in Zbrush/Blender and render them up for reference. I will *try* to stream the rest of my process on twitch if I remember. No promises though, as I haven't built that into a habit yet.
Good luck to everyone else! Can't wait to see what everybody comes up with.

But be careful that the effects from the hand and the staff dont clash.
AND I NEED TO SAY IT LOOKS AWESOME! I cant wait for more updates
Going to somewhat loosely follow this reference. I like my sketch better so I'm just keeping the 3d ref as a way to check certain angles. I think I'm ready to actually start painting this thing now..
First progress image. Still have a long way to go. I do plan on adding some of the gravestones in the back. That was a good idea. I'm open to other feedback and suggestions as well! I am recording/streaming all of my work on my Twitch channel. (Though an hour got lost last week when I blocked in the solid colors. Nothing too important or entertaining at least)
Sorry for taking so long to update progress. I've been quite distracted as of late.. family, holidays.. Oculus Rift. I signed up for a Schoolism class that starts soon too so I'll try to get this close to finished sooner rather than later.
I think I'm ready for the final stages.. Flattening everything and painting it like a real painting! I always get nervous at this point.
Okay I think I'm done. Time to go look through all of the other entries again. They Look AWESOME! Good luck everybody!
Did you try to unstaturate your drawing to check your value?
The ambiant light i super strong wich means there should be strong shadows too.
