Thanks, Meno! I think I'll have to jump to a widescreen ration for the final instead of keeping it square, but these were good to try out poses and ideas ;]
I think I enjoy keeping things messy when exploring. I'll work a bit more on sketches 1 and 3, here's a start.
It's clear to me I don't want a wolf mask, but I completely stole this owl from Chengwei Pan, so I'll be thinking of something else. I'll be exploring the design a little further now.
Thank you, Yangyexin and Sugoilord. I want to keep away from the most obvious ones, but honestly, probably not going for too much originality with the whole idea anyway. I like the rabbit, though I did find it hard to make it work without going too Mononoke.
Here's some sketches for the different types. A deer, a raven and a few versions of the rabbit. I'm leaning towards C myself, or A with some adjustments. Both deer and rabbit would work great with the character, because she's so jumpy and all over the place.
Thank you, Marie. I'm hesitant about using skulls, but it may go well with the feral look I'm going for.
Few more pose sketches I squeezed in during lunch. I'll try and get away from her using her ultimate, as she's doing that in the official splash art, so more exploring to come.
Shall we do a vote? Ignore the design for now, as I was just playing around with that on each of these. Which one do you think would make a sweet dynamic, playful illustration?
Yangyexin, yup, I've been taking a closer look at all the splash art in league and the characters take most of the screen, so I'll zoom in as well. In the images posted I haven't looked into the composition, that's coming next!
Kenna, I'm with you there. I liked the angle of D myself, just thought it's getting a bit too much from the side. Top down view makes her look weaker and I want her in control.
Funk, haha, I would need to try to not make something that reminds people of Mononoke. Take a look at my last few pieces on Artstation (in my signature) and you'll understand. It's a big inspiration of mine, so well spotted.
Thank you everyone for the feedback and kind words!
Here's a little update. I found I like working pretty messy when I'm exploring different choices. Since the official splash has her using the ult, I didn't want to do that and rather have another ability being used. Hope I can make it clear enough in the end.
A few changes. I'll have to change the name of the thread because the idea went on to become something else. Was struggling to figure out what I want for the background, but now I've got something going. I want a surreal place. Any feedback appreciated!
Something I've noticed that personally catches my attention is the fear to leave the canvas, her magic ball thing is so conveniently in the frame that it sort of disrupts the perspective for me because it flattens the pose. If I cover the red orb she jumps out. I think that if you enlarge the orb size it would help, or if the orb is already enlarged(because it is a small spell) increase the rate at which it becomes larger. Don't be afraid to have some of the spell effects spill off the canvas! I'm not 100% sure on this but yeah... XD. I like this so far though good luck!
Thanks a ton, MenoOG! I've been playing around with the orb going off screen and it does look much better. Will be posting an update on that soon enough. Getting the depth and perspective right is quite tricky.
Meanwhile, I totally just took artwork from Riot and overpainted to play around with design, cause I didn't like guessing while making the illustration. Kudos to the original artist.
Here's an update. There are millions of things I will be fixing, no part of the illustration is even close to being done, but I wanted to post it since it's been a while. So, yeah, tons of painting to do.
