Hello everyone! I;m so stoked to start this project. one of the biggest goals for this is going to be learning how to do some hard surface as well as refine design skills! I'm planning on doing a project/mech type of skin for Gnar. I have started to gather references and started with some studies of the character itself before I dive into some concepts.
Yes, yes and yes pls! I really like 4 and 5 cause they look like they will read well from the 55degree angle without being too noisy. They also have a nice sense of weight. Looking forward to this!
Personally I like the ears and tusks on number 3 but I like the body shape and facial details from number 5. Are you going to be making mini gnar as well or only make a mega gnar skin?
@shayleen_hulbert awesome! I will definitely look out for too much noise! thanks for the feedback! @Nuclear Angel thanks for the feedback ! Yes I am also making the mini project gnar and designing them both at the same time. Will post more soon!
These were some of the thumbnails I got done today. So Im thinking the mini Gnar would have blue.teal then turns red when he transforms. I like the shape of the previous concept but the jaw was not working for me. Also i took red in account and made the Mega Gnar in that color pallet. Thanks for the previous feedback! Any suggestions.critique would be super helpful!
Some more iterations with suit and tail. Have some goals for mini gnar that might take a bit more time, will be posting more concepts. Thanks for the feed back
Alright, form the mega gnar concepts I really like the 4th one - nice readability, and form the gnar helmets probably 7. But I will recommend you to match some of the elements like the ears, the gauntlets might be similar but just smaller and simpler and etc. But great stuff so far pal!
@sstoev Yeah that is a great point! after I will def have them feel as if they are the same character. I will continue to flesh out some more ideas with that in mind and with the feedback of the others.
Sorry for the spam of just drawings. I an starting to get a feel of what kind of mega gnar and mini gnar I want, but the designs is not quite there yet. But will continue getting the bad drawings out xD and hopefully get a good one soon. Will be posting more wip. Any suggestions are super helpful.
Cool idea! One thing I'd watch for is the differentiation of Project and Super Galaxy. To me the SG line is a person in a suit that takes control of robots (Power Rangers) and Project is more cyborg (part man/part machine).
Right now mini Gnar is reading to me more like SG, it's most likely because you can see his eyes. I don't think any of the Project skins show the entire face. It's not a visor that covers their eyes, it's more like the visor is their eyes, if that makes sense. Color palette will also be very important. Keep it up!
@AnthonyAnimation Yeah I totally get you! Ill try make it blend more mechanical features that shows integration vs just a suit. I might keep it a visor but have it opaque and remove able only for animations, like ashes skin. This actually helps me with mega gnar being more of a hybrid vs full mech. Thanks!
I agree with Anthony, I think for now it still looks bit like a "super galaxy" kind of design. I think you got the " sharp shapes" right, but having some more "mecanic" parts can help getting the "project" feel. (also, holograaaams)
I combined a few of your sketches and added an opaque helmet to show you an idea of how it could be enhanced (It's just ideas)
You should also select a few parts of mega gnar that look similar to mini gnar, so we can easily associate them and know "oh, it's the small guy. he got angry!". Could be something like the ears/armplates for example
Mega Gnar looks so badass *o* Gj ! Mini Gnar kinda makes me think of Ratchet (ratchet and clank) in this last version for some reason ._. I don't quite put my finger on "why" tho ^^'
These are looking great! Personally I like the concepts where the helmet follows the shape of his ears more closely, I think the ear shape is an important read for mini-Gnar. Looking forward to seeing where you take it!
@UchiLT Thanks!! @Kazefield Thanks for all the help! Yeah he does feel very R&C XD. @missalchemist Glad you like them. @jonjon Good eye! it was one of my reference and inspirations. @motenai thanks! @future-fiction Thanks! Yeah Ill definitely go back and do another round of iterations until it feels more like mini. @Technoir06 It shall be made into a 3d asset! Ill make sure to post updates as often as I can
thank you all for the feedback! ill be working on the 3d model to solve some stuff. Ill eventually want to render these with color, but since design is still up for changes ill be leaving it as a line drawing! More feedback is always welcomed!
Great work you have here, liemnguyenart. I had not thought in make the 45º angular view with values, that's a good ideia, and a nice study you did! Go for it, I'm looking foward for the 3D model!
super rough of the mega gnar, exploring details not in the design so keeping it super rough and going to do some draw overs with reference. Will make mini gnar soon with same method.
Looking great and reads very well! Maybe it would be cool to have glowing bits in Mega Gnar's ears to tie him more with mini? Just a small nitpick that might not actually look good but it's a thought. Keep at it!
I will be working on a more organic left arm then go into some minor detailing before I do the low poly retopo. Any suggestions is welcomed and happy holidays everyone!
Good work Liem! Really like him, especially small form! For the big one - maybe you can add some sort of fusion core on his back, and movable lower jaw would be nice. Looking forward for your updates!
thanks everyone! Its been a while but here are some renders of the hp im going to use for my base bake/retopo. One of the goals is to keep the tri count low but still detailed. Any notes are welcomed! @Artificer Ill def add some light to indicate an engine on the back! and the jaw will be able to open too .
Happy holidays everyone! Its been a busy fun time for me but I have some progress to show! I got the Low poly done for the Gnar characters and did some color on the mega. Im going to explore a little more variety for the color and think of how the mini will compliment the mega. Here are my uvs and tri count is around 7300 for the mega. Anything that could use improvement please feel free to point it out. Thank you!!

Super good progress this far, keep it up
