hey there! been waiting for this contest to be back for a long time, i was itching to partecipate!

so i thought it would be a cool idea to revisit a champion design along with the illustration. Mundo was my choice, since i think his current design is poor compared to the aesthetic of the game and could use an upgrade. 

Zaun is basically a dark-ish steampunk city: my references are going to be victorian clothes and Jekyll/Hyde  related. Here are a few ones:



and here is my very first sketch of the design. Let me know what you think about it, it's not yet set in stone and super open to suggestions! will update accordingly

Your design makes a lot of sense and fits Mundo really well! I like the theme you're going for, but may I ask what inspired the long hair?

thanks a lot i feel like Mundo hair make no sense right now and need some different kind of style...i thought it would be fitting to the character to be so crazy about science to not care about his hairstyle and leave the hair grow and just be there! I still plan to make a few tests for the head though, i'm not fond of them either.

Great concept I really like the direction you're going for. As for what hairstyle, I like number 2 since the long untamed hair look fits him really well.

yeah i think the hair could do  a real difference on how you percive the character.
i have to say that my favorite is the 1-2-6.  the googles are a nice touch also i would give to him a belt full of different object  or syringe ( i guess he needs it a lot troughtout the day to stay in mundo form )because you mentioned about dott. Jackill and mister Hyde .
for now i just want to see what you will come up with in the next step so good work

@MadameDaFunk : he will wear goggles anyway eventually, i think they make a lot of the character's scientist bg alone! also very good input on the belt, will probably use it!

ok so i did a little colored sketch of what i have in mind with the design of the upper body. Let me know how you feel about it!

thanks i also think that's a good addition but i need to reinforce some aspects of it maybe...

I like this new look to Mundo, it really suits him! But the only thing I'm kind of concerned with, is that needle in his back. It's kind of similar of how Warwick has the giant pump in his back. Besides that, he looks awesome keep up the good work!

hey thanks! yes, the mechanic is quite similar, i actually took inspiration from that. The reason of my choice was the original Mundo has a syringe planted on his back (and that's a good design element, it tells a story), but i feel like just putting one feels poor. Since both WW and Mundo are modified humans from Zaun i think it's fine to put a similar contraption, they may work in the same way

so yesterday i did some quick cleaver shape concepts. I already know i want to push the design by adding a few carvings and decorations but i really can't decide what shape i'm going for. I'll work some more on Mundo design to get the feeling right in the meantime...

Really loving it so far, the "suited" one looks so cool , maybe you could add more needles or move it to the arm so he can push it or something.
For the cleaver i would choose something no too much sophisticated but really like the first one feeling.

thanks dude Mundo is kind of the guy that goes on a rampage and stuff so i don't think that moving the syringe would work because he may accidentally hit it while doing his thing, i really think that on his back is the spot that makes the most sense. 

anyway, today i did another sketch to figure out his ''real life'' proportions and anatomy, now i feel like i can work on clothes/accessories and wrap the concept up.

This really reminds me of the incredible Hulk. It would be cool if in game he was a deranged scientist and when he pressed his ult he transformed into the abomination which is Dr. Mundo. I like this a lot, keep up the good work!

So true, didn't t took that in to account.
Mundo don't want to lose his syringe when Mundo slaps (with mundo voice xD)

mmmmh i dunno, i think that would be too much of an overkill for the main design

all right so this is the design i think i'm going for. Changed some proportions from the previous study bc i didn't feel like he was reading like mundo enough. Let me know what you think!!

hey people i'm back! i've been busy to work on other stuff but i haven't forgotten the contest. I've come up with four thumbnails, let me know which one you find more interesting or if you'd blend/modify something!

You did a great job, love your thumbnails! It seems to me that 2 has the most dynamic and story, while 3 has a great angle and shows more of the character. I like 1 too, but it's cropped weirdly at the bottom, same for the 4, image cropped around elbow, which might seem a bit weird. thanks for pointing those flaws out, also interesting template! yeah i'm asking around and a lot of people seem to like n2 the most...i'l take a little more time to decide though

I love it as a whole. Great work and nice concept. Totally love it. BTW, i wish you could change the saliva/tongue color into green. Because green resembles zaun and its nice to retcon mundo with a green color in his body.

I'm really liking 2, shows great action and has a really strong contrast but idk if it really fits with the character, maybe if you tone the light down it would fit a little better; so for the same reason I'd say 3 is the best fitting and most interesting shot.

Woah!! This is dooope! Putting that Zaun element into Dr. Mundo is definitely a Yes YEAH!

I am digging 2's movement and power, but I love the tiny mice on the 3rd one...

thanks!! i'll probably put some green/yellow in the background to stick more with the zaun theme, but classic mundo has this purple/blue palette and i think keeping it makes the character more recognizeable

first update of the year! i got a good amount of feedbacks and decided to go for n°4 in the end, but wanted to add some depth to the pose so i changed it a bit. How do you feel about it?

tiny update. Sorting some shapes and defining environment design things! will probably push the head forward, also want to reinforce the smashed wall concept but still dunno how...

nice composition and dynamic anatomy and proportions. facial express. I personally think that it's little too busy in the background. specially over the knife. Good job.

changed the pose a bit and starting to work on the shapes/values. I am starting to really figure out where i want to head with this piece...

In the new version, I think the neck needs to be thicker. It looks like the head doesnt fit the body. I'm also missing the tongue.

thanks for the feedback! a friend of mine also pointed the lack of traps out, already working on it...the tongue will be added later with all the other details, as for the head i have a similar feeling too...

starting to have a clearer shape of this in my mind. Once i have added and tweaked all the locals i'll upscale the image to work on the rendering/polishing. I also have to add some elements like the tongue and the burning background...

wow is looking great!!! keep it up.....just a tiny sugestion...dont shrink the hand too much...I think the big hand gave it a lot of dynamic feel to the illustration.
