So after a couple of days of trying things I've decided to switch my VFX to something simpler, and at the same time changing the color scheme from Hextech to Void. Below is the projectile that I'm using.
This is some solid work. My biggest piece of feedback would be timing. Right now it feels very stagnant with each element roughly lasting the same amount of time. I would try to add some variance in the lengths of time the warm up, muzzle flash, projectile, and impact live for. Perhaps you could make the warm up have a bit more time to build up and then you get the pay off having a faster moving projectile with a really punchy impact that has an element or two that lingers after the main impact.
You could further bring that train of thought down a level into the individual elements themselves. For instance, vary the spawn time and life of the warm up smoke tendrils so they all don't live for the same length and get to the front of the sphere at the same time; or in the impact make the smoke ring pieces not fade out at the same exact time. It goes a long way in making it feel more organic and less mechanical.
As a final note, personally I'd try to work in another color to act as an accent. Right now everything is very purple. You have some good value ranges but bringing in another hue could help give it some more depth.
Thanks for the feedback I'll be sure to try and get things more varied. I appreciate the feedback on timing and i'll be sure to add an additional color like a red or blue. I really appreciate this feedback and hope to make the changes you have advised.
Another update tried to fix up some of the timing and I think it definitely feels better now. Thanks @Toafer for some feedback, going to try and get some color accents in.
