Whenever I have Adobe Photoshop open to read PSD files, it brings the whole system operation to a crawl. Forget about using a browser whenever that program is open; it slows everything down. So I am looking for some PSD opening alternatives..

You could just update your hardware? Sounds like you have some extremely old computer or very little amount of memory. What are the specs?

XnView is pretty decent at reading PSDs. You can even cycle through the layers, though layer transparency and blending modes are not very well previewed.
