Help! Problem with mesh/ UVs in Maya. What is this and how do I fix it?

Hi everyone, I'm currently working on a mesh in Maya and I've encountered what appears to be a pretty serious problem. This is something that has been a persistent problem over the past couple of days. I'm working in Maya LT 2017 and this problem only happens to this model/ in this scene.

I've finished modelling and I'm now UV unwrapping my model. The model I'm working on is made up of multiple meshes, I'm UV unwrapping them one at a time and this problem occurs on almost all of them.

When I attempt to UV unwrap any of the meshes in my scene they 'break' in a weird way that I've never seen before. You can see in the screenshots below that as soon as I do anything with the UV shell certain vertices appear to either move to the center of the grid, or randomly bridge/ teleport to other vertices in the scene. They then appear to flicker between the broken mesh and the correct mesh whenever I do anything, such as moving around the viewport, or turning checkers on or off in the UV editor.

I moved the shell and unwrapped it, and that completely destroyed all the other meshes in my scene. This doesn't happen with every mesh in my scene.

Yesterday I tried to UV unwrap the biggest mesh in my scene and I encountered the same problem, so I tried everything to fix it.

I've already (In no particular order):
Cleared my history.
Reverted to a previous save.
Deleted everything else in the scene apart from the mesh im unwrapping.
Deleted and emptied all the layers in my layer editor.
Used Mesh -> Cleanup.
Drag selected all the verts in my scene and hit 'merge'.
Combined all meshes in my scene.
Frozen and reset my transforms.

The mesh was still broken after doing all of this, so I saved, closed the scene and went to bed. I picked it up again today and the biggest mesh in my scene wasn't broken anymore. I unwrapped it and started working my way through all the other meshes until I reached the one in my screenshot. the same issue has appeared again and is affecting everything in the scene.

I've started going back through the list of actions I had done previously, and nothing has worked.

You can see below whats happening to the other meshes in my scene.

When the model 'flickered' back to the correct version I exported it before it changed back to its broken state.
I exported the model as an OBJ and opened it up in a new scene, and its ruined all my UVs. They've all been broken up into random UV shells, however the model itself doesn't seem to break when I move my UVs in this new scene.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated, thanks.

hm, fun. I'm partly inclined to think this is a display problem, or at least partly so; like the model has *some* bad thing somewhere that's causing an issue. The only time in recent years that I've seen that kind of display weirdness was when I put in a very old video card while waiting for a replacement.

I'd start with the reimported obj, delete the uvs entirely, and any uv sets you might have. If you break it down into separate objects, it should be easier to pinpoint where the problem is, your cleanup steps are good so far. It might even be helpful to forcibly separate some sets of faces just as a test. Try throwing an auto uvs operation on and see if that works.

Something I like to do is go into smooth preview and see how things look- even if it wasn't modeled for subd, you can get a quick feel for anything that is really out of whack. I've noticed that on subtly broken meshes, that the preselect highlight while in smooth preview is offset. Like I hover over a quad, but it highlights 3 other quads that aren't even related or connected.

You can try deleting the Maya preferences. I sometimes have to do this at school when the tools start acting oddly. Path can look something like this, C:\Users\User\Documents\maya\2017. I usually have my prefs folder backed up since I have customized my settings. I just copy them back and see how it goes.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll give all these steps a go within the next few days and hopefully it will be solved.
