Cant get Zbrush's nanomesh to work for scale armour

I've been trying to figure this out for ages now but nothing seems to be working. I'm using nanomesh to try and place down scales on my character's torso but everything is just misaligned. Is there a better way of doing this? How are you supposed to use this tool?

    Hard to say for sure without seeing what settings you're using. I'd recommended turning on Align to Normal and zeroing out whatever values are automatically assigned to the rotations to hopefully get a clean start with a scale flat against each face. After that you can find which axis to rotate and offset them on to get an overlap.
