I just have this question about if 3D Artist in a big studio or working to deliver an AAA game title can work remotely from another country or job?
For example, if the artist still studying, or studying a master part-time in another country, where the studio doesn't have an office. Can he work remotely from his house? Have this happened in the past? How does it work?

Thanks!

I definitely seen studios outsource assets (although ironically, they get it from another studio that specializes in outsourcing!).

Usually if you look at the job application it explicitly mentions "remote" work.

yes you can freelance for AAA titles, it also does happen that people get treated like an employee and working remotely. but usually those positions are not junior positions

depends a lot on the role. Concept art, as Brian mentioned, is most likely, and character art to some extent. Otherwise it's more likely you are engaged as a contractor through 3rd party, you'd work on the project on site for several months or a year, but payroll, taxes, benefits, etc are handled by the staffing agency.

High spec Indie (Frictional Games, Thekla, etc) and start ups are more remote friendly while large AAA studios (EA, Activision, etc) tend to work with staffing agencies or outsource companies rather than individual freelancers.

Also outsourcing studios tend to be more open to individual freelancers, and chances are good you'd work on some AAA title that way.

this can work as described (individual freelancer working remotely on some AAA title without any middle man involved) if you know the right people at that studio.

getting those contacts and referrals usually requires that you have worked inhouse in the past though and met your contacts there.
