I get the impression that 3D Coat is a more rounded, versatile, and capable software than Zbrush, but I would like to hear an opinion from experts on this subject.
I'm soon to begin learning 3D Coat; its U.I is more to my style compared to zBrush. I'm aware zBrush 5.0 may have U.I changes when that occurs is unknown.
Its a preference thing. I use them both, but i use zbrush primarily for Sculpting. Its just the program I'm more used to. I haven't tried using 3dcoat for anything beyond retopology in Production. Anytime I sculpt in 3D coat i"m doing it for fun and what not. in my opinion one of pros of zbrush is its integration with other apps i use. -Photoshop -Modo etc.
3D coat can do the same, but sometimes its more than one click away. Honestly It'd be super cool to see someone use 3dcoat heavily in production. I'd like to see the results of that.
3D Coat is probably the second best sculpting application on the market right now, however there is a huge distance between ZBrush and 3D Coat in terms of quality and capability. The software itself can be buggy, ill thought out in some areas and very rough around the edges. You get versatility out of it when it comes to painting, UV unwrapping and retopology, especially for a low price but it just cant quite measure up to zbrush if you want to do some good organic sculpting. A lot of the applink plugins that connected it to other 3D software have also been ignored.
For what its worth, its good to have in the tool box just don't expect it to compete with zbrush on the same level. Too much is missing or is not fleshed out. Still, it can get the job done, especially if you are on a tight budget. Its still going to be one of the best singular retopo and painting tools on the market.

zbrush is my go to sculpting app
they both have their strengths and weaknesses, if you just want to pick one software it really depends on what you want to create/do with them.

There's a demo you can try as well.
