Dither Edges for a path Spline UE4

I've been looking into Spline paths for the project I am working on, where we're trying to work out how to add cart tracks or similar features to the landscape around the level/world.

I saw this live talk here @ 17.07: https://youtu.be/oRfVFh_6OyA?t=17m7s
Where the designer has exactly what we'd be after. However he talks about having dithered edges, so that it allows the spline to merge in easily to the floor without a hard seam. But whenever I look into dithering, I can't find an easy way to make it in photoshop or whichever programme I am using at the time.

I've tried using a opacity mask, but it only respects black or white, so i can't easily have a gradient.
And with a translucent material, I can use opacity for a dither but then lose all the normal and other detail maps that are attached to said material.

So i was wondering if anyone has any knowledge or processes that would help me out.

Cheers!
