That's a visual artifact in 2016. Someone here might know how to fix it. The only solution I know of to get rid of the pseudo-faces it creates is to shift-drag a face off and delete it, which resets the mesh back to its normal appearance.
Yeah there is a lot of triangulation going on in that 13 sided ngon. You can help the cut tool by carrying the trigger guard loops up and over the top. You can also try cutting from the bottom up but more than likely it's going to mess up. There are a lot of ways for it to triangulate that ngon and it has no idea what your intent is, it only reacts to what you have done, so you have to help it out.
You might be better off deleting the ngon, extruding the edge and rebuilding the side.
It's a display bug, like the mesh doesn't update or somthing. Those lines don't even match the invisble edges. Disable backface cull. Or revert from Nitrous to direct3D. Or convert back and forth to editable mesh. Or reload your max file *shrugs*
