So I finally decided what to model for my first project. It's M-O from Wall-E, with my personal modification. Here's the concept sketch I just did.

As a matter of fact, I did a test block-out a few days(?) ago. It's not pretty. It was just a test, you know.

The thing is, I am supposed to learn as I go. Even after I finish this model I have to use it for learning other things. (UV, texture, and all the good stuff.)
EDIT: Truth is, I actually started the sketches a couple of weeks ago...I think. I got distracted a lot and I couldn't stick to one thing.

And I wonder when I will be able to model something like this. This is my own design, BTW.

Through the end of this year, I decided to study nothing but hard surface modeling. Truth be told, I have too many distractions, especially doing 2D sketches and drawings. I even decided not to go to figure drawing workshops because I keep distracted from learning CG in general. I do need to put away the graphic novels I bought. And I need to stay away from Pinterest feeds and most of them are stylized 2D characters. I do want to learn how to use Zbrush for stylized characters but that would also be a distraction.
Knowing your post history, I recommend you actually finish this model well. It'd be even smarter if you ask you instructor if you can use you model as a homework assignment: kill two birds with one rocket launcher.
Stop thinking of ways to jimmy yourself out of this, Peter.
You can do it. Just make baby steps.
P.S. That JAIZ guy from FB and Artstation is a huge inspiration and a soul breaker at the same time. XD
P.S.2. Why are most hard surface modeling stuff on Youtube are done with MAX instead of anything else? Comparing to MAX based modeling videos there's not a lot of Maya based Hard Surface modeling videos.
I also think Maya inherently doesn't have the modeling tool quality that Max had for a while. I've had to find a lot of Maya plugins recently to even get to the point where I am quickly blocking and booleaning volumes.
