Hello Everyone, I decided to make a post about this personal project I'm doing to practice my 3d skills. I mainly want to focus on imrpvoing my and work with some hair cards because i haven't done it before.
This is the blockout I started with. I had a few ideas of what I wanted like an uniform, a coat over the shoulder similar to One Piece's characters, and a overall idea of the face. It looks really simple but at least gives me an idea of the main pieces of the character. Then I proceeded with some refinement.
I worked a little bit in the face and started defining the clothes. Adding some wrinkles, belts and buttons. Also, I started playing around with a rough idea for the hair I didn't like it so I decided to change it later. I have planned just to make the upper torso of the character. I liked how the clothing is taking shape however still not happy with the face yet.
I made some changes. I refined the clothes more also added some decorations like the wolf pauldrons to make the silhouette more interesting. for the face I added some scratches and more defining lines because he was looking too young. I think everything is pretty much in place so I will proceed with refining.
I refined few pieces of the character. The coat was really simple and not interesting at all so I decided to make it look more complex and show more material information. Also, I refined the wolf piece because it is hard surface. I retopo it in Maya and used creases inside Zbrush to make it look sharp and clean.
I really focused on the face adding details such as pores, bumps and scars. I added some paint just to see how it looks and I'm pretty happy with the result. I switched the hairstyle as well placing some hair cards following flow I want. Probably I would need to make changes later because I won't really know how the hair would look like before texturing. I will proceed with the low poly and bakes to be ready for texturing.
I'm done with retopo and moving into baking were I will spend a few days fixing artifacts. Hope to get it done as fast as possible to move into texturing the face.
Thanks everyone for your comments I've been working on the face these days. It is my first time actually using a skin shader and was a little difficult to get it right at the beginning. The roughness was tricky because how it looks in Substance is slightly different to how it looks in Marmoset and also getting the skin colors to actually look like skin was a lot of try and error. I'm actually liking how it looks right now! However, I would like to know your thoughts about it, after all I'm trying to learn and improve as much as I can form this project.
Testing some textures. Having a few issues controlling the roughness so far. However I'm pretty happy with the colors and most of the textures. For now I'm going to move into making the hair just to take a break from texturing clothing. Tell what you think could be better so I can take a look and try to improve it
Dude this is amazing!!! Cant wait to see this finished. Curious to see how you tackle the hair textures. will you be doing more realistic hair or stylized?
Good work so far and nice style. I like the wolf shoulder pads even though they look a bit heavy for that jacket. But the only thing standing too off is the face, not sure if is the shader but it all looks a bit too bright
@Asura Thanks! for the hair textures I'm planning to find a point between realistic and stylized I will be testing different options until I find the one who fits the character the best
@aanselmo Thank you! I think the face looks a bit too bright because I set a light in front of the face to test the roughness when I was working on just the head. Maybe I will get rid of it and find a better one or maybe is a shader issue. Anyway, I will definitely take a look, thanks for pointing it out!
Well, I spent a week trying to understand how to make real time hair. This is the first time I try this but I'm actually liking how it looks. Still working to improve it. If you have any comment or link to any information I could use, I would be thankful. Hope you like it!
Comparison Still a few things to fix but I'm getting close to completion. I like how most of the textures are looking. Still having a few issues with the skin and lighting. Any comments and critiques are welcome
After spending a few days working with the lights and the textures I can finally say I'm done with this project. It looks even better than I expected and that makes me happy. I learned a lot with this project. Now I feel more confident with this workflow and the new techniques I learned are extremely valuable. It's time to jump into the next project. Thanks to the people that where following the process of this short project, hope you like it as much as I do! Will be posting some extra images for the breakdown.

It looks great! But for some reason i prefer the looks of him unshaved (as a personal preference) and great update on leather and cloth textures!
The hair looks good too
