If he says it's for class, then it likely means it's suppose to be a finished model submitted for an assignment.
When I was in school, you are not actually graded on how an assignment is presented, it's usually just "show me "x" model by this date".
Which might be ok for a school setting, but on a forum like Polycount, it's expected for a final render to have more substance. Especially because "final" is treated as being closer to industry standards.
