[Maya 2016] Xgen scaling issues

...I know. This is a common problem for Xgen users. I've tried everything I can find, including scaling my mesh down>freezing transformations>applying description>scaling mesh back up, changing the number in the mask field, loweing the preview/render percentages to low values... everything.

No matter what I do the xgen description is far too dense. My density value has to be at 0.01 or maya coughs up blood, and even then it's still far too dense. Can anyone tell me why scaling my xgen mesh down doesn't work, like everyone says it does? It isn't affecting my description whatsoever. To be clear, my scene units are in cm and I did not freeze transforms after scaling my mesh back up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
