Marquee soft select in Maya or only circle?

Hi. Lets say i have two ears and one is very close to the other so if i use soft select the radius falloff touching the other ear. But i need to precisely soft select only one ear so if it somewhere marquee soft select option and not circle it would be handy. Can i do that?

Also i am wondering if i can deselect some  soft selected areas?

Ok, i found that if i switch from volume to surface i can select only what i want but still would be handy to deselect something
