Hoo boy,

Been a minute since I posted. Life gets in the way of that I guess. I'm back though and I'm in the process of warming up for the character contest for ArtStation! Earlier in the year I drew a concept of a modern wizard soldier and am going to use that to get prepared for the contest but also get over my very irrational fear of creating characters. I'm hoping to also gain a better understanding of ZBrush and learn how to control my shapes. I'm also aiming to learn how to hard surface sculpt, although that might be more of a passive lesson this time, we'll see I guess.

Anyways, here's the concept for the character. I'm happy with results I have here, but I remember some folks suggesting I align the design of the magical gear a bit more which I agree. I also need to take the time to design the back of the character as well as explore some of the magical trinkets he carries.

In terms of style, I think I wanted to approach a more Overwatch/Orb stylized feel. So I should probably ease up a bit on the amount of wrinkles and tight details, and model/sculpt the character with more emphasis of stylized proportions and shapes. For now I'm creating a style test with one of the assets, the spell book. You'll guys will probably recognize the concept art from the very talented Betty Jiang.

Things I'm noticing so far. Rocks are WAY too detailed and don't have as much as an emphasis on bevels like the original concept or the intended art style. Center rock section and claws are kind of on the right track, but still suffer from being too aggressive in rock detail. I think I'm redo the corners pieces as I've already spent hours trying to fix them and I'm just not happy with the results I'm at so far. I think one of the other challenges I'm going to face for this project is figuring out where to hold back in the modeling stage and let the textures do the work.

Anyways, I'll forward to pushing forward on this project and also hearing the feedback from you guys. Thanks for stopping by!

Before you commit to the design, I highly recommend reading excerpts from the "Into Darkness" series. It's a WW2 esque fantasy war series where wizards are frontline specialists alongside "rifleman." Magic "stick" guns are recharged magically via blood magic that wizards perform to reload the sticks.

My main qualm is that whole the silhouette is clear about the wizardness, the hat and other elements may be too
obvious for indications. Look into possible other strong ways that are not tropes to communicate the wizard role. Solid bar for a concept though.
