(WIP) low poly DC-3 dakota airplane

so first things first, im completely new here and i dont even know if this is the right section to post in, but here goes anyway.

i'm GiometryE, or Giovanni, i'm still a rookie when it comes to 3D design but i like doing it nontheless. This time i decided to step out of my comfort zone and tried to make something a bit more difficult than a building, i wanted to make an aircraft, so i picked the DC-3. I wanted to keep it low poly so it can be used as an asset for CSL and for my portfolio.

But now i've got a problem. i wanted to apply the details on later with a normal map (the plating details, flaps and the door and windows) but i'm at a total loss on how to do that, am i supposed to model the details on the plane and create a normal map out of them ? if so, is there an efficient way to do that ? i use Maya 2016 for modeling, but doing with quad draw on the mesh itself so far hasn't cut it for me.

If anyone could give some pointers i would really appreciate it.

Here is what i have so far by the way.
