This one focuses on traditional animation. I know most of us here are 3D animators but it always helps to look back at traditional animation from time to time to practice the principles and see what else we can learn (or re-learn). No need to animate a feature length 2D movie, it can be as short as you like or can even just be a set of drawings (poses, figure drawing, facial expressions.. etc). If you need 2D software or reference material I collected a bunch of links here https://animatorsresourcekit.wordpress.com/tag/2d/
Examples: - Gesture Drawings - A Bouncing ball in 2D - Animate a change in facial expression - Experiment with smear frames - Draw a set of poses with great line of action - Visual effects (Explosion, Fire, Water.. etc)
Try to keep it short and use it as more of a learning exercise than a competition. Make sure to post your WIP's. Have fun!
Cool challenge!! currently I don't have that much time but Im woking this on weekends and after watching the challenge I will do the effects in 2D ! It's a small thing like dust and the rocket ignition/smoke trail but I'll try my best its been a long time since I don't do 2D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkfrgvIBv4A
will do my best to jump in on this. Looks like it'll be a busy month but it's been over 10 yrs since I did hand drawn frames and it would be nice to do some again.
Threw this together this weekend as a kind of base for this challenge. Since I've made it in 3D, I'm gonna try and make it in 2D. I've never tried 2D animation before so this might be... Interesting.
another program option to consider is using Maya's grease pencil - its a bit limited but you can get decent results (especially if you want to add 2D elements on top of 3D) This is an older test I did - all 2D elements were made using grease pencil
Haven't gotten too far yet, but here's an update on where I'm at so far with this project. I'm planning on using 2D Animation for the blasts from the raygun and maybe some other effects. I'm not completely satisfied with the actual character yet though, any feedback would be appreciated.
Hey RKirtlink, I left a few notes on syncsketch for you. Overall, great Idea. I have something in mind that is very similar to this, even the same rigs. You can push the poses a little more, one of my comments points that out. What is your workflow? Do you have stepped keys or splined keys right off the bat? I ask because sometimes 85% of the time (depending on what type of animation you're doing) animators would block out their timing in stepped mode, then when blocking is done they will spline. Either way, its looking good. Can't wait to see more. Good luck.
@ChristianOrellana I blocked it out in stepped and quickly did a spline pass. I'm probably just going to go back to stepped to fix things and redo the spline pass.
First pass I am having so much fun doing this lol. it reminded me how much I loved to do animations in the corner of school books haha https://youtu.be/BMIbxQrH2hg
Thanks @ChristianOrellana !! and yeah it's actually a rocket launch for a video I posted above ! Have a new version which I added gray areas, I already did some test with motion blur and there is no need to define the half-way shapes right now they look like a soda being opened the entire time but they look so different with a little blur and sells the smoke effect I was thinkin to add yellow and orange but I think I will skip that haha I want to finish this project already :P https://youtu.be/H0EmreXpuAk
Nice work @Arturow, which software are you using for this? It would be awesome to see a breakdown once you are done if possible. Looking forward to seeing more!
Thanks @_adamturnbull !! I am using Photoshop ( and after effects to help me with the initial gray areas by using the bevel and emboss effect). I am going to switch to flash to get better/cleaner shapes. Also I don't quite like the onion skin photoshop has haha but sure, I can do later a breakdown with every frame . I want to do a splash effect next and I am pretty sure there are tons of slow motion drops over youtube :P
This was so much harder than I thought lol, used reference at first but then it was a nightmare to work following the reference. I think I should had done better to presserve volume in some parts https://youtu.be/Xf2_yOsy9tA
I have unfortunately broken my collarbone since starting this challenge, so I don't think I'll be able to continue. Looking forward to seeing what others produce nonetheless!
Holy shit , take care @LloydHallam , Also everyone care with the carpal tunnel, I had a little itching in that zone and I immediately bought a wristband with a metallic line in it and problem solved ( now I use it everytime I work and in casual games)
Here is how it ended with the integration of the 2Deffects and with help of others effects , there is a major mistake in shot4 but i will call it done lol, I forgot to animate the ears (FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU...)
This is my first pass for the challenge. Right now I'm Animating in Maya, but the 2D effects would be drawn in afterwards. I am going for an Overwatch Highlights Intro. For a Lightning Queen character. Please feel free to leave your critiques. And feedback is good feedback, thank you.

And a tutorial from Alex Redfish to do flames ( it helped me a lot with the one I just did :P ) ( look his other works , that guy is insane)
