Were they holding Ctrl when they pushed it inwards? This would cause it to extrude and create new polygons, rather than push and stretch existing ones.
Also their geometry could be different. Even with the same dynamesh resolution, they could have a denser mesh due to the object scale.

Dynamesh's resulting mesh density at a given resolution value is relative to your mesh's scale. You'll need to use a higher resolution value to achieve a dense mesh if your mesh is small. You can alter the scale of your mesh with the scale tool, or with the Scale slider under the Deformation menu.
