Small problem with Ambient Oclussion mixing

I've recently started an online course on substance painter and i've found myself stuck in this particular chapter about mixing and editing the ambient oclussion map using the layer system in substance painter.

The idea behind the lesson is that you're supposed to add the ambient oclussion map as a flood layer on the AO channel of your texture set  and setting the mixing mode to replace instead of multiply that you're able to modify it with more freedom. The problem is that whenever I try to add my AO map to a flood layer it gets mapped incorrectly, now a picture is worth 1000 words so i'll show you what it looks like:

Has anyone run into this issue before? What could be causing such a mismatch?
