Skyboxes with clouds and landscapes in blender - any tips to share?

I'm looking for ways to use blender3d as some sort of terragen replacement.

Basically, I want a way to quickly make  a landscape shot of a rocky planet with a different atmospheric density, sun color, etc.
Does anyone have good resources on the subject?

The reason for this question is that needed some rendered skyboxes and because of that I've killed last two days in blender 3d figuring out volumetrics, realizing that a decent noise-based volumetric cloud can take 14 hours to render. I did get a decent result in the end and figured out bunch of stuff about particle system use in blender, but I"d like know if there's a faster more streamlined way to do it, because setting up cloudscape/landscape via methods described by "blenderguru" takes at least 30 minutes or so, and proper volumetric cloud based off noise textures takes absolutely ridiculous amount of time to render.

So... does anyone have tips to share about the process?
